Donations Needed: School Supplies for Dutchess County Children

Dutchess County volunteer, Jessica Lopez, is calling for support from the community to help children in emergency and transitional housing get prepared for the upcoming school year.

School Supplies

Through its programs such as The Gannett House and The Lagrange House, Hudson River Lodging provides emergency and transitional housing. Families that are placed in emergency housing are provided with basic necessities, meals, transportation, 24 hour security and any other assistance a family may need while trying to adjust to their temporary living situation. In addition to addressing the immediate needs of families and individuals, Hudson River Lodging also helps them overcome any issues that may have led to their homelessness by helping them access community resources, work toward their goals, and transition to more stable housing.

Among those currently placed in Hudson River Housing programs are more than 100 children that are students in the Arlington, Spackenkill, and City of Poughkeepsie school districts. While Hudson River Housing does a great deal for these children and their families, there are limits to what they can provide.

Last year the children placed in the program attended school without supplies.

Lopez is asking for support from the community to collect enough supplies and donations so that each child residing in a Hudson River Lodging program begins the 2017/2018 school year with all of the supplies on their school lists.

These children have enough on their mind – the least we can do is help them start the school year feeling confident,  prepared and ready to learn.

Below are lists of the basic school supplies needed and organizations that have graciously offered to act as drop-off locations for supplies. Stop by any time during their open hours to donate items.

Donations can also be made in the form of cash or checks. Cash and check donations will be used to purchase the more expensive items such as scientific calculators and backpacks.
