    1. Michelle Hong Jeni Howe’s Doula Care
      Overall Rating:
      5

I wish I could give Jeni a rating of a thousand stars. She was recommended to me by another mom who had worked with her, and I am very pleased to say that she lived up to her stellar reputation. After my third baby was born, I quickly realized I needed some extra help while I regained my footing. Luckily, Jeni swooped into our lives. She would come to our house very early in the morning and help care for my newborn while I got my older children ready for school. The morning routine flowed so much more calmly and smoothly when she was there. Having her help also meant that I could eat breakfast, catch a nap, and take a shower so I could face the rest of the day feeling rested and ready. And while the baby (and I) napped, Jeni would do whatever she could to help out around the house (folding laundry, washing baby bottles, tidying the kitchen, etc.).

Jeni was a font of baby-related knowledge and resources, and the information she provided was extremely useful. For example, I had some trouble breastfeeding (as I did with my older children) and Jeni spent a great deal of time thinking through the issues and options. She put together a comprehensive analysis for me with suggestions and tips, which was very helpful to have. She also helped me figure out what kind of baby carrier to get, and she even lent me one of her own so I could try it out for a couple days. And when I expressed interest in trying out cloth diapers for the first time, Jeni shared her research with me and helped me navigate through the options.

Despite the fact that she knows a lot about babies and parenting styles, Jeni does not pretend to have been born an expert. In fact, one of the wonderful things about her is her humility and eagerness to learn. She is continually taking classes, reaching out to experts, and looking for opportunities to learn as much as she can about different parenting styles, baby care techniques, products and gear, etc.

I think it’s important to mention that Jeni was totally supportive of my parenting choices and was eager to help me with whatever I needed, and she did so without passing any sort of judgment. I am a working mom who is planning to return to my job after my maternity leave ends, so it was important to me to get my baby on a predictable schedule. I breastfeed, but because of low supply problems, I also supplement with formula. I am now starting to use cloth diapers with my baby, but when Jeni first started helping us, we were exclusively using disposable diapers and disposable wipes. These are all potentially controversial issues among advocates of attachment parenting, but Jeni never batted an eye. She was as supportive as a best friend would be, and never made me feel guilty about any of my choices. In fact, she found numerous ways to encourage me and help me feel more confident as a parent.

With Jeni’s help, we have largely transitioned out of that sleep-deprived, chaotic, early newborn phase. But my older children and I became so attached to Jeni that we are still trying to find excuses to see her, even though I technically no longer need postpartum care. Jeni was a true blessing for us, and will be a blessing for any family that is lucky enough to have her help.
