While out and about with my kids this week (more precisely – enjoying some crazy delicious garlic knots at Slices of Saugerties), my daughter noticed a brochure for the Stick to Local Farms “Sticker Adventure” so we checked it out. I was instantly hooked.
If you haven’t heard of this project yet, here’s the rundown: Produced by Maria Reidelbach and the Corn Cow Company, the brochure opens up to a map displaying 26 farms and farmers markets in the Rondout Valley area. To play along, you collect unique stickers as you visit each of the participating farms and then add the stickers to your map. Collecting 10 stickers will earn you four free rounds of Homegrown Mini-Golf at Kelder’s Farm and the Stick to Local Farms Cookbook by Maria Reidelbach – a seasonal guide to cooking Hudson Valley produce with over 100 easy recipes. If you collect all 26 stickers, you receive the big, sparkly completion sticker as well as a farmer’s market basket of goodies! All you have to do is send in a selfie with your sticker-ful map. Easy!
As a self-proclaimed adventurer, Hudson Valley fanatic AND homeschooling mom, naturally I fell in love with this project. It’s not just about fruits and veggies, either. The wide variety of participating farms will make for some exciting new experiences, with offerings like wildflowers and herbs, horseback riding, urban farming, maple syrup, grass-fed beef, farm animals and more. We plan to spend the next few months collecting as many stickers as we can while discovering more of the great bounty our region offers.
The Stick to Local website offers several helpful touring ideas including a list of Kids’ Favorites which is a perfect place to start! We encourage you to pick up a free brochure for yourself and check it out! Maps can be found on brochure racks throughout Ulster and Dutchess Counties, and you can also request one at Stick2Local.com.
